Andy Murray will compete in a lower-tier challenger tournament in Italy next month after withdrawing from the Australian Open with COVID-19.
The 33-year-old Brit tested positive for the coronavirus two weeks ago, shortly before he was scheduled to take a charter flight to Melbourne.
The three-time grand slam winner instead is entered in an indoor tournament in Biella, Italy, beginning on Feb. 15, the Italian Tennis Federation announced Wednesday. The event has a prize pool of about $160,000.
Murray, a former World No. 1, is currently ranked 123rd as he continues to work his way back from multiple hip surgeries. He last played in a challenger event in August 2019 in Spain while recovering from his injury.
Murray has won 46 career titles, including the U.S. Open in 2012 and Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016. He also won Olympic gold medals in 2012 and 2016.
