The Patriots lost future hall-of-fame quarterback Tom Brady this offseason when he signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and display a quarterback picture that shows Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer. The Patriots did not draft a quarterback in this year’s NFL Draft.
At the NFL Combine, Lewerke ran the 40-yard dash in 4.95 seconds and had a 31.0-inch vertical jump. Lewerke started all 13 games as a senior but his inconsistent play left him without all-conference recognition (260 of 436, 59.6 completion rate, 3,079 yards, 17 TDs, 13 INTs passing; 111-363-3.3, three TDs rushing). He helped the Spartans defeat Wake Forest in the Pinstripe Bowl on Dec. 27.
Lewerke, 23, took a step back in 2018, however, completing just 54.3 percent of his passes (184 of 339) for 2,040 yards and eight scores with 11 interceptions. An injury to his throwing shoulder limited him to 10 starts (he held for placements in all 13 games), though surgery was not necessary.
The Phoenix, Arizona native’s first season as a Spartan finished with an honorable mention All-Big Ten season, becoming the first MSU QB to pass for 2,500 yards (246 of 417, 59.0 completion rate, 2,793 yards, 20 TDs, seven INTs) and run for 500 yards (559, five TDs).
