Reports: Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, leader of ISIS, killed in U.S. raid in Syria

NINTCHDBPICT000486462077WASHINGTON –– U.S. special forces have carried out a raid near Barisha, Syria, targeting ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi with helicopters, jets and drones, two US officials told NBC News late Saturday.

ABC News later confirmed reports of Baghdadi’s death in the operation.

The NBC News report stated that the U.S. received actionable intel from U.S. intel sources in recent days. A White House official said that President Donald Trump will be making a statement Sunday at 9am ET.

On Saturday at 9:23pm ET, the president tweeted; ”Something very big has just happened!”

 

According to NBC News’ Courtney Kube, U.S. forces fired from the air, and then landed and gathered intelligencel. Forensic testing is underway, but Baghdadi is believed to be among the dead.
