The New York Rangers announced their 2019-20 regular season schedule today. The Blueshirts will begin their 93rd NHL season on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2019 against the Winnipeg Jets at Madison Square Garden. The Rangers are beginning the regular season at home for the fourth consecutive season and for the 28th time in franchise history. The last time the Rangers began four or more consecutive seasons with a home game was a seven-season stretch from 1981-82 – 1987-88.
The Rangers will play a total of 28 games against Metropolitan Division opponents this season, as they face each of the other seven teams in the Metropolitan Division (Carolina, Columbus, New Jersey, NY Islanders, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Washington) four times apiece. New York will play 24 games against teams in the Atlantic Division, facing each of its eight Atlantic Division opponents three times apiece. The Rangers will play two home games against four Atlantic Division opponents (Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, and Toronto) and two road games against four Atlantic Division opponents (Florida, Montreal, Ottawa, and Tampa Bay). The Blueshirts will play 30 games against Western Conference opponents, facing each of the 15 teams in the Western Conference twice in 2019-20.
The Rangers will reach several franchise milestones during the 2019-20 season. The Blueshirts will play their 6,500th all-time regular season game on Mar. 3, 2020 against St. Louis at Madison Square Garden. The Rangers will also play their 7,000th all-time game (regular season and playoffs combined) on Feb. 3, 2020 against Dallas at Madison Square Garden. The Blueshirts enter the season with 1,994 all-time regular season games played at the current Madison Square Garden, which opened in 1968. The Rangers will play their 2,000th all-time regular season game at the current MSG on Oct. 27, 2019 against Boston.
The Blueshirts will have four home-and-home sets in 2019-20, all of which take place during the second half of the season: one against the NY Islanders (Jan. 13 and Jan. 16), one against Detroit (Jan. 31 and Feb. 1), one against Philadelphia (Feb. 28 and Mar. 1), and one against Pittsburgh (Mar. 18 and Mar. 20). New York will have four home-and-home sets in the same season for the first time since 2009-10. The home-and-home set against Detroit marks the first time the Rangers will play against the same opponent on consecutive days since Oct. 9 and Oct. 10 in 2015 against Columbus. The Blueshirts play three of their four games against the Islanders during the 2019-20 season in a nine-day span from Jan. 13, 2020 to Jan. 21, 2020 (Jan. 13 at MSG, Jan. 16 at NY Islanders, and Jan. 21 at MSG). In addition, those three games are in a span of four contests for the team (the Blueshirts play back-to-back games against the Islanders on Jan. 13 and Jan. 16, followed by a game against Columbus on Jan. 19, and another game against the Islanders on Jan. 21). Entering the 2019-20 season, the last time the Rangers faced one team three times in a span of four team games was in 2005-06 (the Blueshirts faced the Islanders on Oct. 19, 2005, Oct. 20, 2005, and Oct. 27, 2005 – the only game against a different opponent during the stretch was against Buffalo on Oct. 22, 2005).
The Blueshirts will play seven of their first 10 games, and 11 of their first 16 games, of the 2019-20 season at Madison Square Garden. All of the Rangers’ first four home games of the season are against Western Conference opponents, while six of their final nine home contests and 11 of their final 22 home contests are against Metropolitan Division opponents. The Rangers have a season-long, five-game homestand from Oct. 20, 2019 against Vancouver to Oct. 29, 2019 against Tampa Bay.
The Rangers will have 13 back-to-back sets during the 2019-20 season; the team had 11 back-to-back sets in both 2017-18 and 2018-19. Only two Eastern Conference teams have fewer back-to-back sets than the Blueshirts do in 2019-20. New York plays 15 games in a month in three different months during the season – November, February, and March. The Rangers’ 15 games in February this season are tied for the most games the team has played in the month in franchise history (New York also played 15 games in February during the 1955-56 season). The Blueshirts will play at least 15 games in three different months in the same season for the fourth time in franchise history (2003-04, 2013-14, 2016-17). In addition, the Rangers will play at least 15 games in March for the fourth consecutive season and for the eighth time in the last nine seasons.
The Blueshirts play seven home games apiece in October, November, and March, six home games apiece in December, January, and February, and two home games in April. The Rangers play eight home games on Sundays in 2019-20, more than on any other day of the week during the season. New York also plays seven home games on Mondays, seven home games on Tuesdays, six home games on Wednesdays, four home games on Thursdays, five home games on Fridays, and four home games on Saturdays throughout the course of the season.
The Rangers’ longest road trip of the 2019-20 season is four games. New York has two separate, four-game road trips during the 2019-20 season: from Dec. 8, 2019 against Vegas to Dec. 14, 2019 against Anaheim, and from Dec. 28, 2019 against Toronto to Jan. 4, 2020 against Vancouver. During the Blueshirts’ second four-game road trip of the season, the team will play four consecutive games in Canada (Dec. 28, 2019 at Toronto, Dec. 31, 2019 at Edmonton, Jan. 2, 2020 at Calgary, and Jan. 4, 2020 at Vancouver). The Rangers will play four consecutive games in Canada for the first time since a stretch from Oct. 18, 2011 to Oct. 24, 2011 (Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg).
The Rangers have their five-day bye week following the 2020 NHL All-Star Game, which takes place on Jan. 26. Beginning with their game on Feb. 14, 2020 at Columbus, 13 of the Rangers’ final 26 games in 2019-20 are against Metropolitan Division opponents.
The Rangers are playing in the 2019 NHL Thanksgiving Showdown this season, as they face the Boston Bruins on Friday, Nov. 29, 2019 at Boston. This marks the seventh consecutive season that the Blueshirts are playing on the Friday after Thanksgiving. In addition, the Rangers are playing in the NHL Thanksgiving Showdown for the sixth time in the last seven seasons, and the six games have been on the road against either Boston or Philadelphia. The Blueshirts will also play on Hockey Day in America, which takes place on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2020, as they face the Bruins at 3:30 p.m. at MSG.
