It will be a historic and emotional moment when the Reggae Boyz host a Gold Cup match for the first time ever, taking on Honduras at The Office in both team’s Group C opener Monday night.
This is their fifth all-time meeting at the Gold Cup, with the sides splitting the previous four matchups. In the last encounter, Ryan Johnson scored the lone goal to lift Jamaica to a 1-0 win at Red Bull Arena during the 2011 Gold Cup group stage.
There are high expectations for Jamaica, which reached the final – and lost – in each of the last two Gold Cups. The Reggae Boys are seeking their first Gold Cup title and perhaps announced their intention with a 1-0 win over host United States in a pre-tournament friendly at Audi Field on June 5. Shamar Nicholson capitalized on a US turnover in midfield, cutting the ball back onto his right foot and scoring on a sensational strike. Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Andre Blake earned the clean sheet, diving to deny Josh Sargent late to secure the win.
Honduras booked its 14th Gold Cup appearance by finishing fourth in the hexagonal qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Los Catrachos reached the inaugural Gold Cup final in 1991, losing to the United States. Honduras have reached the semifinals four times, including three in a row from 2009-13. In the 2017 Gold Cup, they were eliminated by Mexico, 1-0.
Honduras went to South America to prep for the Gold Cup, drawing Paraguay, 1-1, as Maynor Figueroa of the Houston Dynamo scored a late equalizer. Four days later in Porto Alegre, they suffered a humbling 7-0 defeat to Brazil in which Dynamo winger Romell Quioto was issued a first-half red card.
