Rhode Island man gets 15 years in prison on drug charges

BOSTON (AP) — A Rhode Island man who laundered the proceeds of illegal drug sales through a used car dealership in Massachusetts has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Federal prosecutors say 43-year-old Luis Lopez, of Tiverton, was also sentenced Wednesday in federal court to five years of probation.

He agreed to forfeit property worth more than $1 million including three Rhode Island properties, the Fall River used car dealership that he purchased in the name of a relative, and several luxury vehicles.

Lopez, who also goes by Juan Gonzalez, pleaded guilty in October to conspiracy to distribute cocaine, heroin and fentanyl and money laundering.

Authorities say he imported 50 to 100 kilograms of cocaine from Puerto Rico, and distributed it in New Bedford and Fall River.
